How do we support inclusion in nursing (disability focus)?

Although the NHS has policies, guidelines on Equality Diversity and Inclusion they are not adopted / implemented in a consistent way across Trusts and rarely known by but a few interested individuals.

Recent initiatives like the NHS Workforce Disability Equality Standard (WDES) and work by NHS Employers Diversity and Inclusion team continue to highlight barriers to disclosure of a disability with rates are very low and not a true representation of the number of nurses who have a disability.

Adopting Universal Design is a holistic approach that aims to best support everyone within an organisation by proactively reducing barriers. Universal Design reframes a bolt-on, problem-focused approach to disability and seeks to find the best solutions for everyone that supports a positive worker experience, recognises an individual’s skillsets, increases retention, and reduces attrition.

Learning Outcomes 

• Explore Universal Design for Learning as a proactive approach for inclusive practice which enable greater accessibility using some simple solutions
• To explore different terminology relating to inclusion such as equality, equity and intersectionality and reasonable adjustments
• To learn key facts about government grants - Access to Work and Disabled Students Allowances (DSA) – and how they can support inclusion
• Promote use of equipment, assistive technology, software and apps that are often recommended for people who have a disability in university as well as healthcare settings
• Identify national, NHS and Trust policies and guidelines that promote inclusion

About the Course Facilitators

Kerry and Andrew Pace from @DiverseLearners

Prior to becoming a registered nurse in 2004, Andrew Pace worked as a Communication Support Worker for Deaf children and adults in a wide range of settings, and teaching staff Deaf Awareness and basic sign language skills. Andrew worked as a mentor in Diverse Learners supporting healthcare students at university who have mental health issues or disabilities until taking timeout to complete a Masters in Public Health in Jan 2020.

Kerry Pace (prounouns are she/her) Founder of Diverse Learners, specialist Dyslexia and Dyspraxia teacher (aDShe QA27, Patoss IF5872)2018. Winner of Quality Assurance of Dyslexia Support, 7 Principles Award from the Association of Dyslexia Specialists in HE (aDShe).
